Get to Know a Top Orthopedic Surgeon on Long Island

  • Aug 17 2021

Knee and hip injuries can be devastating, especially when the injured person is an athlete, or enjoys getting out and enjoying everything that Long Island has to offer. No one understands this better than South Island Orthopedics’ Dr. Jonathan R. Mallen, one of the top hip and knee surgeons in Nassau County.

However, as many of Dr. Mallen’s patients would agree, his skill in the operating room isn’t the only reason they are living active, pain-free lives.

Dr. Mallen’s Commitment to Active, Healthy Lifestyles Young male athlete holds his knee in pain after being injured on a Long Island soccer field.

A native of New York, Dr. Mallen has been an orthopedic surgeon for 17 years. As a student at New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY, he decided to specialize in orthopedics because he wanted to help people maintain healthy lifestyles (or return to them after an injury.) He continued this commitment throughout his postdoctoral training, which took place in Boston and New York City.

As an expert board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mallen has developed a reputation as one of the best hip and knee surgeons in Nassau County. He specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, but is quick to note that surgery isn’t always the best—or first—course of treatment for everyone.

“I often recommend conservative, non-surgical treatments,” Dr. Mallen says, noting that he may recommend physical therapy, cortisone or PRP injections, bracing, or pain management options first.

Treating Patients With Dignity and Respect

Dr. Mallen says that his priority is to treat all patients like the individuals they are.

“My patients can expect to be treated with dignity and compassion, and to be an active participant in their treatment,” Dr. Mallen says. “This means spending time with patients to truly understand the history of the injury, or the pain, and how it’s affecting their

lives, in addition to using imaging technology like X-rays and MRIs.”

And, should a patient require surgery from one of the top orthopedic surgeons on Long Island, Dr. Mallen works with them to develop a conservative surgical plan that has the fastest possible recovery time.

“I offer patients advanced techniques such as partial joint replacement, computer-assisted knee replacement, patient-specific, and customized knee replacement and anterior hip replacement,” Dr. Mallen notes.

Outside the Operating Room

You may be curious as to what a hip and knee surgeon in Nassau County does for fun outside the operating room.

In the case of Dr. Mallen, it’s getting involved with the community and enjoying everything that Long Island has to offer. As a resident of Suffolk County, NY, that means taking advantage of the incredible range of activities available right in his own backyard — and getting to know people in his community. Dr. Mallen is proud that many of his patients come from all over Suffolk County towns, including Dix Hills, Huntington, Melville, Northport, Deer Park, and Commack, to see him.

But when he’s not helping his neighbors get back to doing what they love, Dr. Mallen and his family enjoy the benefits of the nearby beaches and parks for hiking, as well as the arts and culture options in Manhattan (and beyond.) And, as a lifelong sports fan, he enjoys rooting for New York sports teams.

Many families are attracted to the beaches of Long Island, including Dr. Jonathan Mallen from South Island Ortho.

Dr. Mallen is also well-known outside the operating room for his commitment to the young people of Long Island. For many years, he coached youth baseball and soccer and served as a Cub Scout leader. He’s also a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and an active member of the Nassau County

Medical Society and Medical Society of the State of New York.
