Treatments

At SIO we offer a variety of nonsurgical and surgical treatments to provide pain relief and improved function. Our state-of-the-art nonsurgical treatments include physical therapy, bracing, injection therapy, and pain management to physical therapy. During physical therapy, our skilled professionals assist patients in restorative exercises to improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. When surgery is required, we take the least invasive route possible, frequently performing operations arthroscopically. Arthroscopic surgery has the advantage of being minimally invasive since it takes place through very small incisions. This reduces the risk of excessive bleeding, shortens recovery time, and lessens postsurgical pain and scarring.

Diagnostics

Before we begin treating you as a new patient, we thoroughly investigate your condition, using all of the most current diagnostic methods available. In addition to hands-on exams, the most commonly used diagnostic tests for orthopaedic conditions are digital X-rays, arthrograms (to view joint space), MRIs, CT scans, discographies (to examine spinal discs) and ultrasound-guided injections. The ultrasound-guided injections have the advantage of being a form of treatment as well as a diagnostic tool.

Tests for less common causes of orthopaedic symptoms may also be administered. These include blood tests for autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, bone scans to detect abnormalities of bone formation that may be the result of infection or cancer, Doppler ultrasound to check for blockages of the blood vessels, and electromyography (EMG) to record electrical activity in the muscles which may be indicative of a neuromuscular disorder. Once we have diagnosed your specific condition, we will work with you to come up with a successful treatment plan.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is an effective treatment method dedicated to improving movement and functionality in people whose age, disease or injury has restricted them. These programs help patients recover through the use of restorative exercises that focus on developing muscle strength, flexibility, balance, posture, coordination and overall pain relief.

A Patient Education

Well aware that trust is the underpinning of any productive doctor/patient relationship, we view orthopedic care as a partnership between the patient and our team. For this reason, we are committed to educating you about our diagnostic findings and proposed treatments. By encouraging your active participation in your treatment through education and exercise programs, we work collaboratively with you to achieve your optimal recovery, striving to make you a healthier, more resilient individual. Our talented and compassionate professionals are equally prepared to treat adults and children.

The SIO philosophy is both pragmatic and conservative, meaning we focus on increasing mobility and decreasing pain through nonsurgical measures whenever possible. Only when such measures have been exhausted do we recommend orthopedic surgery. We treat arthritis symptoms and other pain and range of motion problems of the hand and wrist, foot and ankle, knee, hip, neck and back with physical therapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy and ultrasound-guided injections. When these conservative measures are not successful, our skilled surgeons are highly adept at performing arthroscopic surgery to correct a wide range of disorders, including: ligament tears, bone spurs, cartilage repair, carpal tunnel, trigger figure, meniscal tears, and ACL injuries. Arthroscopic surgery has the advantage of being minimally invasive, reducing pain, risks and scarring, and shortening recovery time.
