Munif Hussain, DO, MS, CAQSM

Munif Hussain, DO, MS, CAQSM is an innovative member of Non-Operative Orthopedics & Sports Medicine division at South Island Orthopedics. 

Dr. Hussain is a board-certified sports medicine physician who has provided treatment for patients of musculoskeletal disorders. He has treated patients of varied ages and athletic ability—ranging from professional wrestlers, mixed martial artists and elite marathon runners to recreational sport enthusiasts.  He is talented in the field for minimally invasive non-surgical procedural treatment options in musculoskeletal disorders.  He has experience with trauma/fracture care, concussions, arthritis, overuse disorders, upper and low back strains, other non-sports related shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, thigh, knee, foot, and ankle concerns.

He offers up-to-date treatments including state-of-the-art ultrasound guided injections.  In his practice, he will use various healing agents such as prolotherapy/sclerotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), regenerative stem cell derivatives, hyaluronic acid (HA), corticosteroids selectively.  Dr. Hussain says, “I try to exhaust evidenced based, well studied treatment options for my patients before they have to consider surgery”. He has offered an improved quality of life for many patients locally and internationally.   He is multilingual, speaking Bengali, English, and Spanish fluently, and holds advanced certifications in musculoskeletal ultrasound-guided injections and orthobiologic treatments. Dr. Hussain has practiced in a variety of outpatient settings, ranging from multispeciality to hospital based care.

Dr. Hussain is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He has worked across various prestigious medical institutions,  where he served as a Chief Physician in the Department of Non-Operative Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. He completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Northwell Health – North Shore University Hospital and his Family Medicine Residency at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn.  

Dr. Hussain is well recognized among his peers as an educator and mentor.  Dr. Hussain is well versed and published in research studies involving hypertension, body mass index and appeared in the June 2019 edition of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. He has presented clinical cases at the podium for the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) conference.  He has completed advanced level musculoskeletal ultrasound courses as a member at the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM).  In 2017, 

Dr. Hussain, was appointed Teaching Associate in the clinical department of Emergency Medicine/Sports Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and taught musculoskeletal ultrasound of the upper and lower extremities.  He currently serves as Core Teaching Faculty for the Northwell Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at North Shore University Hospital.

South Island Orthopedics proudly embraces Dr. Hussain given his experience in the field.  Dr. Munif Hussain will prescribe a customized comprehensive physical therapy and osteopathic rehabilitative programs for his patients.  He uses his powerful network of physicians, physical therapists, and imaging specialists to aid in treatment plans for challenging, complex cases.   He adds, “I truly practice as an osteopathic clinician.  I look at the patient as a whole, and am motivated to getting a patient back to enjoying their quality of life.”

Dr. Hussain continues to remain active as a thought leader in exercise medicine, strengthening/conditioning and one who will constantly communicate with minds of athletes who have progressed through different stages in their lifetime.   He has served as a team  physician for high school & collegiate sports.  Dr. Hussain has worked with professional dancers.  He is experienced as a Ringside Physician for USA boxing, professional & freestyle wrestling, various mixed martial arts and kickboxing tournaments.  He has served as a medical captain numerous times for NYRR NYC Marathons, Half Marathons, 5k races.  He has provided coverage in exhibition events including  Muay Thai UFC Fight Nights®, Tough Mudder®, and IRONMAN®  competitions.  

Dr. Munif Hussain is a loving father and partner, and has travelled with his family for team sports.  He also plays bass and electric guitar for leisure.
